First lady Michelle Obama is touring China with her daughters and mother, a trip that for her Chinese hostess – Peng Liyuan, wife of President Xi Jinping – marks a rare chance to try out on a domestic audience a role that China is still struggling to define.
The wives of American presidents are traditionally also public figures, with roles that range from stylish hostess – like Martha Washington, Dolly Madison or Jacqueline Kennedy – to strong policy advocates like Eleanor Roosevelt or Hillary Clinton.
Mrs Obama plans to visit schools and speak with American exchange students, to promote a theme of education and cultural exchange between the world’s superpower and its rising challenger during her six-day visit.
