Chinese players battle political attacks against ‘green opium’

Against a backdrop of stock market turmoil and slowing economic growth, China’s crackdown on corruption and ostentatious spending has zeroed in on targets as varied as cognac, hairy crabs, gambling, and lavish banquets. Now, President Xi Jinping has taken his austerity drive on to the golf course.

Only some 0.03 per cent of China’s population of 1.4bn regularly play golf — a pastime that official Chinese media channels have dubbed a “rich man’s game”.

That disparaging description has coincided with many of country’s middle class being hit by the big fall in Chinese equities and concern over the widening gap between rich and poor.
