Indonesia halts Chinese high-speed rail link project

China’s $5.5bn high-speed rail project in Indonesia has been halted a week after its groundbreaking ceremony in a reminder of the problems Chinese companies can face in emerging markets.

Beijing thought it had pulled off a coup in October when it beat fierce competition from Japan to win the contract to build Indonesia’s first high-speed railway.

The Jakarta-Bandung link, China’s first such project in Southeast Asia, is seen as a test of the ability of Chinese companies to operate in a complex democracy. It is being watched by countries such as India, Malaysia and Singapore, which are considering the merits of Chinese high-speed rail.
