Liberal Chinese magazine folds in defiance of Beijing controls

The publisher of an influential liberal Chinese magazine has closed it down rather than submit to a state-mandated leadership reshuffle in the latest conflict centring on tightening political controls.

Yanhuang Chunqiu, sometimes translated as China Through the Ages, made its name with scholarly articles that disputed the official Communist party version of history. It enjoys a loyal following among academics and liberal intellectuals in China and is self-funding through subscriptions.

Founded by party elders in 1991, its elderly publisher and editors represented a more liberal wing of the party that had been sidelined during a return to Communist orthodoxy led by Xi Jinping, the president.
