Motorsport’s ultimate diplomat Jean Todt fights to win

Jean Todt speaks French, English, Italian and German. Linguistic skills are useful as president of Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, the rulemaker and disciplinarian for motorsports across 143 countries.

Past associates describe the 71-year-old Frenchman as a fearsome leader, direct with criticism yet able to inspire loyalty from subordinates. They say that his method is to create a machine de guerre. He chuckles after I mangle the pronunciation, but agrees that he has created a war machine. He says: “I’m a fighter, I like to win.”

Mr Todt’s office within FIA’s headquarters in Paris, with a spectacular view of Place de la Concorde, pays homage to victories earned over five decades in motorsport.
