China, Japan and South Korea draw closer on trade

The premier of China has called on the leaders of Japan and South Korea to unite in upholding the international trading system and resisting pressure from US President Donald Trump.

Speaking after a trilateral summit in Tokyo, the first since 2015, premier Li Keqiang called for the three east Asian economies to strike a trade agreement.

His remarks show how China is casting itself as the champion of the global trading system in the face of US tariff threats and demands to renegotiate trade deals.
