President Donald Trump has ordered an FBI investigation into the allegations of sexual assault against Brett Kavanaugh, his Supreme Court nominee, after a key Republican senator refused to vote for the judge unless there was an inquiry.
“I’ve ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh’s file,” Mr Trump said on Friday afternoon. “As the Senate has requested, this update must be limited in scope and completed in less than one week.”
The reversal came after Jeff Flake, an Arizona senator and critic of the president, stunned the Senate judiciary committee before a key vote on the judge by saying he would not back him when the full Senate considers his nomination without a probe.
