May to call for Brussels’ help as Brexit deal and premiership hang by a thread

A humiliated Theresa May will embark on a tour of European capitals today to plead for a better Brexit deal, after the British prime minister was forced at the eleventh hour to abort a House of Commons vote on her plan.

Mrs May admitted she was facing defeat by a “significant margin” in the vote scheduled for yesterday, but was unable to tell MPs how she might improve the deal or whether she would put it to a vote before Christmas.

The pound tumbled after the announcement, with sterling falling 1 per cent against the dollar to an 18-month low of $1.2602, while the euro was up 1.2 per cent at £0.9045.
