Boeing faced mounting doubts over the safety of one of its fastest-selling planes after a second deadly crash in less than five months, prompting China and Indonesia to impose an unparalleled flight ban on the 737 Max 8.
The US aircraft maker stood by the plane yesterday, saying it did not have “any basis to issue new guidance” after the newest version of its short-haul workhorse, operated by Ethiopian Airlines, went down shortly after take-off on Sunday, killing all 157 on board.
It was the second accident to involve the 737 Max 8, which entered service only in 2017. One operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air crashed soon after taking off from Jakarta in October, killing all 189 passengers and crew.
