‘Flight hackers’ tap into the holiday market

I was catching up on emails in a Berlin coffee shop in the depths of winter when I got a sun-drenched WhatsApp video from my niece and family in Sydney. I idly wondered if it was feasible to join them. I can work anywhere, after all.

The four-figure fares on major airlines almost snuffed out the plan, but Air China was offering London to Sydney at £505. I bought a ticket and days later was getting in plenty of beach time.

I was proud of this bargain until a recent trip to Barcelona, where two young men politely suggested I had rather overpaid.
