I’ve been doing some background reading on the Blair years, thanks to a colleague lending me a copy of The Insider, the private diaries of Piers Morgan, the roguish ex-editor of the Daily Mirror and News of the World. I had resolved to keep my distance from the government, but Downing Street called seeking a meeting within days of my appointment. Now I am sitting opposite Blair, flanked by his bald middle-aged PR flak-catcher Dave Hill.

“Thank you for seeing me, Prime Minister.”

TB: “Call me Tony.”
