Moldova votes in election critical for continued EU membership bid

Officials accuse Moscow of unprecedented tactics to sway voters towards pro-Russian parties

Moldovans are voting on Sunday in a critical parliamentary election that is set to determine the country’s future direction, with voters choosing between further integration with the EU and a renewed alignment with Russia, amid accusations of meddling by Moscow.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s Action and Solidarity party (PAS) is hoping to retain its parliamentary majority and push ahead with its plans to secure EU membership within the decade.

But it is up against a coalition of opposition parties that Sandu has said aims to reverse Moldova’s progress towards the EU and rejoin Russia’s sphere of influence — an outcome supported by Moscow, which has greatly intensified efforts to influence the vote.
