Just before Christmas 2024, the writer Sebastian Mallaby met Sir Demis Hassabis for one of their regular talks in a London pub. This time, the co-founder of the AI research company Google DeepMind fished a mysterious leather box out of his backpack. Inside was a heavy gold disc he had just received: the Nobel Prize for chemistry. Hassabis told Mallaby that he wouldn’t swap the prize for any amount of money. “If you offered me $10bn for the Nobel, I would say no.”
