Air Canada, the country’s largest airline, has started cancelling flights ahead of a planned nationwide strike of 10,400 flight attendants and cabin crew, after pay talks broke down this week.
Air Canada members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), issued a 72-hour strike notice on Wednesday morning, forcing the airline to ground planes on Saturday, during the peak summer holiday period.
The airline on Thursday will begin a “phased wind down of most of its operations to be completed over the next three days,” said chief executive Michael Rousseau.
