What happens if the US government shuts down?

Key economic data would be delayed if lawmakers fail to break funding deadlock

Washington is heading towards the first government shutdown in nearly seven years, unless Republicans and Democrats can agree a last-minute deal to keep the federal government funded.

The government will shut down at 12:01am on Wednesday Washington time if lawmakers are unable to hammer out an agreement that can pass both chambers of Congress.

That could halt some public services and see hundreds of thousands of federal workers furloughed. It would also delay the release of vital data on the US economy.
