US ‘wellness’ industry scents opportunity to go mainstream

Supplement manufacturers position themselves to exploit the Trump administration’s openness to fringe science

Since Donald Trump came to power, US health policy has been taken over by a group of people with a reputation for their irregular scientific views. Health experts say the fast-growing wellness and longevity industries are already positioning themselves to take advantage.

Multiple senior US officials, including health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, have spoken supportively about anti-ageing products and various other non-mainstream health and medical treatments. Some have had financial relationships with businesses in the industry. 

The Trump administration’s willingness to launch unevidenced attacks on the safety of some existing medicines is creating potential opportunities for alternative therapies. In September, the president urged pregnant women to avoid the common painkiller paracetamol, known as acetaminophen in the US, citing an unproved link to autism.
