UK drops target for international student recruitment

Government to encourage education providers to open campuses overseas as it focuses on reducing migration

Ministers are abandoning targets for international student recruitment to the UK and will instead encourage British universities and private schools to open branches overseas.

The government is setting out plans to drive a further expansion of British educational providers around the world, in a shift of approach that coincides with its efforts to reduce immigration.

An international education strategy to be published on Tuesday aims to grow the value of British educational exports by a quarter over the next four years but will no longer try to do this by bringing more overseas students to the UK.
