Sony is preparing to defend a £2bn lawsuit over claims that millions of PlayStation users in the UK are overcharged for games on the console, in the latest legal challenge to technology companies’ market dominance.
The class action case, brought by consumer champion Alex Neill on behalf of an estimated 12.2mn users, accuses Sony of levying “excessive and unfair” charges on downloads from its PlayStation Store.
The antitrust claim, which barring a last-minute settlement is due to be heard by the Competition Appeal Tribunal, a specialist court in London, highlights the shift in recent years from physical retail to digital downloads in the booming gaming industry.
