Europe’s airlines eye opportunities from Iran war fallout

With services of dominant Gulf rivals disrupted, there is a brief window to provide direct flights that avoid the region’s hubs

With their Gulf rivals all but grounded, Europe’s faltering airlines are eyeing an opportunity. 

Qatar Airways is operating with only very limited flights, and while Emirates and Etihad are still running flights into the region, none of the three carriers is providing the connecting services that are the lifeblood of their business model.

Even if the Iran war ends quickly, many people will be reticent to fly into — or through — the region’s hubs of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha for a period. Travel agencies have begun cancelling future holidays, even those next year, that pass through these airports.
