Eight years ago, protesters against Ukraine’s pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych wrapped themselves in EU flags as they ran towards snipers’ bullets. Today, Ukrainians are in body armour as they confront the tanks and rockets of Vladimir Putin’s invading forces. The fight is still the same: to preserve both Ukraine’s sovereignty and its “European future” — the prospect of living not under a Moscow-style authoritarian kleptocracy, but in a modern market democracy.
