Walk through Beijing’s central business district at lunchtime and it hardly looks like China at all. Many of the people bustling around in suits or congregating in coffee shops have western faces.

The country, which officially overtook Japan as the world’s second-largest economy this year, is becoming an increasingly important job market for western executives. This is driven by several forces.
