Ferguson police officer not charged

A grand jury has decided that a white police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, earlier this year should not face charges, in a decision that was met with outrage and violence among crowds gathered in a community on edge.

The shooting of Michael Brown in August sparked weeks of unrest in the St Louis suburb, including multiple clashes between police and protesters, and a frank debate about the state of US race relations, particularly the treatment of young black men by white police officers.

The grand jury had been reviewing evidence and witness testimony in the case since August before reaching its decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson.
