How to persuade your people you really are on their side

Boris Johnson, London’s unkempt mayor, deliberately ruffles his hair and pulls his shirt out of his trousers before making a speech.

How do we know? The author of this book says he has seen Mr Johnson do it. He does not hold it against him. Although they are on opposite political sides — the mayor is a Tory; Lancaster was a Labour speech writer — the author says pretence is fine in a leader.

Although you will get into trouble if you constantly say things you do not believe, thriving at the top often requires artifice. You need to look confident even when you are terrified, flatter people who may be hopeless and lower your voice.
