US government takes lead in guidelines for self-driving cars

The US government will issue its first formal guidelines for self-driving cars this week, marking a major step for a technology that has been hampered by uncertainty and patchwork regulation.

The White House said on Monday that autonomous vehicles could make transportation “safer, cleaner, more accessible and more efficient”, and reaffirmed its support for the industry.

The new rules are focused on safety, and include a 15-point assessment that carmakers will be asked to complete before putting their driverless cars on public roads.
