Jean-Claude Juncker has called for tighter EU integration based around the eurozone and Schengen open-border system and urged an end to member states’ veto powers in a push to unite the bloc ahead of Brexit.
In his annual State of the Union speech the president of the European Commission said the “wind is back in Europe’s sails” thanks to a strong economic recovery and the EU seeing off Eurosceptic electoral threats in Austria, the Netherlands and France.
“Let’s set sail and catch the wind,” Mr Juncker told the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
