Sir Keir Starmer on Monday vowed to fight any bid to topple him, insisting he is “not going to walk away” and claiming that the country would never forgive Labour if it indulged in the “chaos” of a leadership contest.
In a crucial speech on Monday, aimed at his own fractious MPs, Starmer said that Britain was facing dangerous times and “very dangerous” political opponents, warning that the country risked going “down a very dark path”.
In the immediate aftermath, Catherine West, a former minister, said she would be writing to MPs to canvass support to “call on the prime minister to set a timetable for the election of a new leader in September”.
