My fellow American: who should be remembered for the next 250 years?

Artists, thinkers and leaders from the US and beyond pick the person they think deserves to be honoured: from Abraham Lincoln to Dorothy Parker

Abraham Lincolnby Jamie Dimon

For 250 years, America’s greatness has been forged by a belief that our country was “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal”. President Lincoln devoted his life to advancing these principles — and to preserving the US when it faced its greatest moral and military test. He understood that America did not have a divine right to success; it must be continually defended and strengthened, and the benefits of freedom and opportunity should be within reach of everyone. He believed our country carried a responsibility to prove to every citizen, and to the world, that a free society can be “the last best hope of Earth”. He modelled what leadership looks like: moral clarity, humility and the ability to unite a team of rivals around a shared purpose. Lincoln should remain a standard for every American and for leaders everywhere.
