Ex-police commissioner adjusts to life as head of Oxford college

Undergraduates called to the office of Helen King, the new principal of St Anne’s College at Oxford university, could be forgiven for feeling intimidated.

Prominently displayed on a bookcase are the truncheon and handcuffs she was issued with when she entered the police force in 1986.

Ms King exchanged her role as assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan Police to become the first police officer to head an Oxbridge college.
