Pupils learn new school rules as term begins

Leicester leads way back with staggered lunches, sanitiser and sessions for parents

For the children of Rushey Mead Academy in Leicester, back to school does not mean back to normal.

At lunchtime, children eat in rows facing forwards, the seats opposite them cordoned off with tape. In class they hold up whiteboards to show the teacher their workings. Library books are sealed in bags. Hand sanitiser is everywhere.

“It’s so different to what we’re used to,” said Rhea Brahmbhatt, a year 9 pupil who was in school on Thursday for her induction session, which teachers started this week by bringing in one year group each day.
