Labour pledges to push on with UK workers’ rights bill

Amendments to legislation will be overturned next week, says Downing Street, as unions warn against delay

Sir Keir Starmer’s government will overturn amendments to its employment rights bill when it returns to the House of Commons next week, Downing Street has said, but the comments failed to reassure trade unions who fear the package will be watered down in the coming months.

Labour will overturn Conservative-backed amendments to dilute the bill, which were passed by the House of Lords before the summer recess, according to Number 10.

“We are absolutely backing the [employment rights] bill,” said a spokesperson on Monday, insisting the legislation was both “pro business and pro worker”.
