Five ways to cope when you fail to get the top job

Not everyone dreams of getting to the top, but, for those who do, there comes a time when they realise they are not going to make it. Perhaps they were shortlisted, or heard they were in the final three, and then the job went to someone else.

These overlooked candidates look at how old they are, how old the new boss is, how long bosses tend to stay, and think “well, that’s it”.

How many people feel this way? Because the number of jobs becomes fewer as you ascend the organisational hierarchy, and as there is only one top job, those who do not get there will always outnumber those who do.
